What is LEAP? -- The LifeCourse Effective Action Program is a way for adults to explore and revise ten Patterns they created in childhood and continue to use as adults to manage their grown-up lives. This means that, as adults, we live our lives based on the incomplete and limited experiences of childhood! LEAP takes the view of all modern psychology, that childhood is the foundation for the rest of one's life.

What is "LEAP On-Line? -- This is a way for us to meet via Instant Message on the internet. Using the materials you receive and my guidance on instant message for one hour each week, you can explore and change your limiting life-long patterns! You learn (1) how you created your Patterns; (2) why you created them (the purposes they served for you); (3) how you apply childhood patterns today (long after they are out-of-date); and (4) how to change them to make your patterns more effective for you as a grown-up.

What is a Pattern? -- "pattern" is anything (method, action, physical tool, etc.) we use to make sure things turn out the same every time. Think of a cookie cutter. We don't like surprises; we do like sameness. Using a pattern is a way we keep things the same. Other patterns are habits, routines, rituals, designs, plans prototypes, and so on. When we were children and new in this world, we needed to find ways to manage things. And so we created such ways (call them "patterns") and used them to get things done: getting dressed, eating, brushing our teeth...at the rituals of our then-young lives.

What is the problem with Patterns? -- Not much. We need our patterns, and without them our lives would be chaos. We can say that our Patterns are who we are and without them we'd never be the same person two minutes in a row! Oh yes, there is one problem with patterns. Useful to us in childhood, when we continue to use them as adults instead of learning new ways, we keep ourselves from growing up, and we depend on childhood to manage adulthood.

What is the LifeCourse Institute? -- We promote Adlerian psychology through books, counseling, classes, and LifeCourse Effective Action Program. Recent ventures include forming the New England Community of Adlerian Psychology (NECAP) in 2008, and now bringing LEAP directly to people through the internet as LEAP On-Line.

Who is Dr. Alfred Adler? --  Adler was a famous Austrian psychiatrist Freud  asked in 1902 to work with him in developing psychological treatments of the neuroses, which became psychoanalysis. After working with Freud for nine years, Adler left (1911) to promote his own approach, which he called "Individual Psychology." His ideas and methods have been the major influence on counseling for the past 100+ years.

What is "Adlerian" Psychology? -- Adler's psychology was different from those of Freud and Jung, the other two pioneers in the field of modern (or "depth") psycho- logical counseling. He stressed goal-orientation (behavior is explained by future goals, and symptoms have a "use" in personality), the individual within the social setting ("all problems are social problems," "Social Embeddedness," and "the Iron Law of community life"), the importance of one's position in the family constellation, especially    sibling positions, and much more. You can learn more about Adler and his major ideas at our web site: www.lifecourseinstitute.com.

What is Adlerian Counseling? --  It is different from, yet like, most other forms of counseling. This is because Adler's influence has been wide and deep for over a century, shaping counseling and psychotherapy in many ways. It is different here because I consciously focus on the Adlerian concepts and methods that have been so powerful over the years. So then, it is counseling based on Adlerian psychology, by an Adlerian psychologist, for adults who want to work on their problems using Adlerian principles.

Why should I take LEAP? --  Of course I think everyone should take LEAP! Every adult can benefit from the complete exploration of their lives that LEAP provides! Socrates (a very smart man!) said, "Know Thyself" and also said that "the unexamined life is not worth living!" If we don't know ourselves, we are living with a stranger. We need to know about ourselves and how to make the most of the lives we are given.

Can I do traditional counseling with you? -- I don't do traditional therapy until the client has completed LEAP. Once this is done, (1) the client may feel their counseling issue has been resolved by LEAP-learnings and the Practice Task. Or (2) the client may enter therapy with someone else, perhaps a local counselor, bringing with them what has been learned in LEAP. Or (3) the client may continue with me. Note that, when you sign up for LEAP On-Line, you get not only the ten weekly one-hour sessions of LEAP, but also ten additional half-hour weekly sessions on a counseling topic of your choice. After that, I offer on-line counseling in blocks of 3 one-hour weekly sessions for a fee of $100 for each three sessions. That's $33 per session of LEAP-based psychotherapy.

How much does LEAP On-Line cost? -- The fee for LEAP On-Line is $350. This includes ten one-hour on-line sessions, the LEAP On-Line  NoteBook, and ten FREE half-hour counseling sessions after you finish LEAP Online. The first half-hour on-line consultation session to set up LEAP and create your Practice Task is also free.

What if I have to quit before it's over? Do I get my money back? -- You receive back that portion of your total fee for sessions ($300) that has not been used by your participation in LEAP On-Line. If you enroll and change your mind before the first session, we refund the full $350. If you take part in 3 sessions (for example) their value of $30 per session (in this example, $90) would be subtracted from the total $300, so your refund would be $210. There is no refund on the LEAP On-Line NoteBook. You get to kept it and use it on your own.

What if I have to miss a session? -- One make-up session is built into the schedule, if either of us must miss a session (due to illness, blizzard, unbreakable date, etc.) .  We either extend the sessions to an extra week, or set up a special session. This is for one session only and is NOT an additional session. After you complete the ten sessions of LEAP, you still have ten FREE half-hour counseling sessions.
